Readymade

Earlier this month, at the Maker Faire, one of the guys from ReadyMade asked me why I didn’t re-up my subscription when I told him I used to subscribe. I half truthfully told him that I just couldn’t afford it since we bought our townhouse. but, the real reason why I didn’t resubscribe is because I got the feeling that you could count the number of people of color that appear in Readymade for the past 6 months on one hand. Paid advertisements don’t count. Not that they’re obligated to represent a diverse cross section of our society, it just got really creepy… every month, a magazine of somewhat-cool ideas and lots of skinny white people. That and the non-stop “renew now!” junk mail I got from them contributed to why I did not renew my subscription.

microformats and structured blogging

This is my one sentence sell on “Why structured blogging?”: I can catalog my data for the long term, have a web presence for search engines to crawl to help people find me, and then offer them a feed so they can stay connected to my content.

WRC Theme Viewer update

I’ve made a leap back into helping develop the back end of the
themes.Wordpress.net theme viewer
after a brief hiatus. Things are moving along so nicely. Alphaoide and Shadow have been doing some absolutely fantastic work, and I’m extremely pleased with how cool this project is. There’s a page set up to show you the feature/bug list and the changelog.

no, wait.. Vote for me!

Starting a new Wordpress blog? Good!

get the latest:

install it.. it’s easy. if you need help, go to: http://www.wordpress.org/support/

go download these, mandatory… I mean, unless you like wasting time deleting spam from your comments. *I* don’t, so I use these:

follow the installation instructions, but, typically, it’ll be “put these files in the /yourblog/wp-content/plugins folder, login to the admin area, and activate the plugins.”

you might want to download these:

ok, that’s it. You’ll find stuff you like. These are the ones I like.

1000th post!

Not including all the one-off websites I made back from 1996 or so, but starting from about 2001 or so, I started up a blog.. before they were really called blogs. In fact, I was using PHP-Nuke, then PostNuke, so there’s probably some posts that are older and turned into digital dust, long ago blown away with the winds of server changes.

Anyway, this is my 1000th post. I started noticing the counter getting into this range for the past month or so, and it kind of freaked me out a bit.

“The 1000th post should be something witty. Something important. Something profound.”

But as I crept up on it, I got more and more wrapped up in the idea of the 1000th post.

“The 1000th post MUST be funny, important AND profound.”

So, in order to take my mind off this, I started up a music blog and I made a more serious effort to do something with my fine art blog… I figured, hey, I’ve had some guest bloggers here, but my guest bloggers don’t really post too much, so what I’ve posted on my other blogs probably makes up for the number of guests posts on my main blog. It’s not so much important that I have precisely 1000 posts (although the counter says so) so much as it is a “neighborhood milestone” . Now it’s more like this:

“Wow, I’m in the neighborhood of 1000 posts on my blog!! What a milestone, sort of!”

So, Maybe not the most witty, important, and profound thing I’ve ever posted, but thanks for visiting, read on. :)

I’ve figured out and turned on mod_rewrite and permalinks, so it will be interesting to see what happens to traffic post-google-dance… probably nothing spectacular, but, it’s always nice to be as searchable as possible.

Some sounds we like

Hey, I’ve started a music specific blog called “Some sounds we like“, in which I’m planning to release new tracks and podcasts. In fact, podcast 1 is up. :)

Quality of blog entry coding?

Quality of blog entry coding?:

Question for you… how important is the quality of the HTML code for your blog entries? Quote this whole entry and blog your answers.

Technorati Tag:

uh.. not really important to me, if it’s clear who’s speaking, and who’s being quoted. I think 2-deep blockquotes is one too many. There’s just got to be a better way to do threaded conversations on blogs. if you could register a conversation origination point, then have a system to distinguish comment points based on blockquote tags, and branch off from there visually, you could draw a pretty good tree diagram of the topic tangents.

what A list mentions do

On 5/21/2005 I posted a couple of articles on timelapse movies I’d created. Phillip Torrone noted them in the make: blog shortly thereafter, and.. this is what happened to my traffic:

ok, now keep in mind, this traffic for the whole month, and I posted those articles at the end of the third week. This is what A-list mentions do: deliver a lot of traffic to you. :) If you’re new to my feed, welcome, I hope you continue to find something interesting occasionally.

Update : Somehow my links got posted around, apparently? Here’s the hit counter from the dotmac account:
