second life builders : scale model trains builders

I’m just sitting here eating some oatmeal (…ok, tmi)… thinking about a headline I saw on fark. (yes, I’m back. it’s after the election, so, I feel like I can go enjoy the photoshop contests again) It asked something like… “Why do some men build model train sets?” and I was thinking that there’s not much of a difference between the draw of scale model train set builders and Second Life builders. There’s no point other than to create, escape, focus, craft, and enjoy a model of a system you put together with your own hands. But that’s quite a point. Some people enjoy the feeling of pride in crafting working systems… hence computer programmers, second lifers, train set builders, woodworkers…. Most of our modern employment requires building or maintaining systems of a different kind, and so very few people get to enjoy maintaining their own systems for a living. I think that’s why we like model trains and woodworking and second lifing.

although, in light of that, I did just sell my land :( I was made an offer I couldn’t refuse, and I haven’t seen Jopsy in months, so when an offer for sell for about 80 bucks came along, I figure I made my money back for as long as I’ve been sitting on that land. Now I’m landless. But also at a zero-overhead for logging in since I bought my 10 dollar membership first, then bought land… now that I’m landless, no more land ownership fees. No more art gallery, tho :( Sigh..

But, with my new bandsaw, I figure I should probably spend a lot more time with that IRL instead ;)

LOTR PWNZ

now, I like SubEthaEdit, but…

Yes, SubEthaEdit is the coolest thing since sliced bread. Yes, it’s groundbreaking and innovative. Yes, there’s nothing else like it. Yes, we’ll probably work like this on all applications in the future. Yes, it’s a neat use of technology.

However, SubEthaEdit forever assumes ownership of ALL TEXT FILES even if you run it just once and throw it away… and that is fucking obnoxious.

This app may help: RCDefaultApp. Mostly a note-to-self, but you may find it helpful to rearrange “what file types are handled by what application” types of tasks.

Update: Oh… if you hit command-I (“get info” in the file menu) on one of the file SubEthaEdit has assumed ownership of, twirl down the “open with:” triangle, select BBEdit (or whatever), and ohhh yeah… click on “use this application to open all documents like this [change all]” Nice!

help: DIY multimedia projector

Have you seen this, or know where we can locate some of the ribbon cable shown here? It’s about 15.5mm wide, 30 pin and ~0.35mm thick. Click to see close up photos of the ribbon and connector.

Update:http://dkc1.digikey.com/US/PDF/T043/P1.html

http://dkc3.digikey.com/PDF/T043/0049.pdf

here’s the 6″ part: 30pin 15.5mm digikey part number: HFF-30U-06-ND price each: $5.40 parlex part number: 0.5MM-30-6-B

I’m almost certain this is it. Holy crap, you would have a hard time resolving how many emails we sent out and have thus far gotten no response from to try to find this information. Heuristics in full effect, oooof.

HOWEVER, I would like to give special thanks to Ken at Meritec who was extremely helpful, and very generous. I’d recommend that if you’re looking to do a medium to large fabrication job, the folks at meritec might serve you very well.

Update 2: Yeeeeeeeeah! I want to thank Pik Narksuk of Fujikura America, Inc. for helping us out and handing me 6 one foot cables to the specs I was looking for! See that photo? F-U-J-I-K-U-R-A! Thank you thank you thank you! I think these are going to do the trick!

dude, that’s like.. $60 worth of cables right there, dang!

Update 3: Ok, things are working quite well with the new cables after jono and I spent a whole day figuring out the best way to strip that stuff. (sandpaper some off, then scrape with a sharp sharp blade, easy pressure, no rushing. You’ll tear it or scrape off the metal if you’re too aggressive) check it out:

oh, a video you want? Ok, here’s a video to go watch!

Now we’re starting to run into new problems with the design. We repacked up the whole mess of electronics of the monitor back into the case, and are comfortably using the longer FFC cables to clear the boards from the sides to provide a clear channel for the light from the overhead projector… Now what we’re starting to realize is that the whole mess-of-electronics-repacked-into-the-case is maybe going to prove to be a serious problem when we actually get the glass onto the overhead projector.

have you seen this cable, or know where we can locate longer lengths of it?:

the cables say “Sumitomo-Y” on them. I tried to contact the US representative for that manufacturer, but they haven’t gotten back to me. Notice, also, the cable appears to be made with semi-rigid blue plastic as the substrate. It’s somewhat flexible, but it’s much more rigid than the FFC cable. On the FFC cable, the leads were plated with some silvery metal over copper. We haven’t dissected this cable, so I don’t know for sure what the story is with the internal construction. We do know the cables are ~44.5mm wide, ~1mm pitch between the leads, and ~0.4mm thick. Ideally we’d find cables that would be 6-12″ long? Shorter is fine. Help, have you seen this cable or know where can find it?

iSight barcode reader

Wow, Wendy just showed me (thanks Fred!) Delicious Library. Wow. So cool. Now you too can be a library. And loan stuff out. And know where it is. Scan in your books, cds, DVDs, whatever, using your iSight (so cool!!), and Delicious Library goes out and grabs amazon.com info for you automatically. Deeeeluxe.

Server transition

welp, I can’t say enough good things about South Valley Internet. I had a static IP and unmetered usage for 50 bucks a month. The thing there was that we got picked up by them from DSL Designs when they were unfairly killed off by Verizon. If you live anywhere from Los Gatos to Gilroy, this is by far the best deal around. No port or protocol blocks. Nice folks. Locals. Their official policy… well, I couldn’t find their official policy. I just got to host my server at home and not really talk about it with them. I got what I wanted, and didn’t cause any problems for them. Everyone’s happy, I guess, without needing to have an official agreement.

Unfortunately, moving one town down to Campbell, SVI can’t provide service to us. We’d be 19,000 feet to the closest central office… I’d hazard a guess that’s the same one we’re currently connected to at our apartment. So, we have to migrate to another ISP. I’ve selected Speakeasy, for their explicitly open policy about running a server at home. The price is a bit higher, but so is the throughput. Hopefully, in about a week, this site should be a bit snappier.

Björk, waving her pirate flag…

In this interview of the brilliantly talented bjork, she has some enlightening words about the current state of vanilla music and the Internet’s miraculous intervention:

So Björk is not superstitious then?
“You know, its ironic that just at the point the lawyers and the businessmen had calculated how to control music, the internet comes along and fucks everything up.” Björk gives the finger again, this time waving it into the air. “God bless the internet,” she adds.

And what about you, then?
“I’ll still be there, waving a pirate flag.”

I love it… er, well… I love her :)

Transformers Breaks

iPod Photo

It’s been rumored all over the Internet for weeks… Finally, the day has come when the “pod” part of the ipod really comes in to affect. See… everyone saw this coming… If it was destined to just be a music machine, it would have been called “iMusic” or “iPlayer” but when Jobs introduced it a few years ago, it was introduced as a device that would carry your stuff, not just your music. So, today.. the iPod carries Music, Data and now…. PHOTOS. Truly bad ass. :)

On a less-exciting note, the sell-out U2 iPod leaves little to desired. Other than the cool darth-vader color, this iPod is very “meh” in my opinion…
