it’s hard to believe, but it was a year ago that we did the last SIDESCROLLER event, so we’re WAY overdue. Come join us Saturnday, November 8th, from 6:00pm to midnight-ish for a night of retro and not-retro games in the genre of the futuristic side scrolling shooter. $5 donation is requested so we can help pay the rent and electricity bill at Works/San Jose. Bread Day 2006

MySQL Camp is Coming

MySQL Camp is Coming:

Jay scooped me on the news but he’s right – we’re organizing a MySQL camp in the spirit of Barcamp.

One of the great things about living in the bay area is that that there are a lot of smart geeks here. Generally speaking, most of the smart guys in MySQL work either for MySQL AB or one of the big Web 2.0 shops like Facebook or Yahoo. This should give everyone the opportunity to leave their cubicles and share all their tricks with the whole community.

We’re also going to be doing this the right way which means that we’re going to expect people to lead their own sections and contribute in some way shape or form. This isn’t just another top-down conference where sessions are approved by a committee.

One great piece of news is that MySQL AB is really excited about the opportunity to do this and will be sending a number of core MySQL hackers to discuss MySQL internals.

We’re currently trying to shoot for Nov 10 through 12.

If you’re able to hook us up with a venue for around 100 people with individual rooms for about 5 concurrent sessions please send me an email.

I’ll provide a link to the wiki as soon as its setup.

Here’s the update on my Etsy journey. I’ve sold 70 items on Etsy, many of them multiple patch sales, and as you can see I have 85 people on etsy calling me a favorite. Today I got my 50th feedback rating, and I’m rockin’ it 100% positive. Etsy’s been very good to me. Big huge gigantic thanks to all my customers, Etsian and non-etsian.

Meat Beat Manifesto Feb. 9, 2006

I’ve been a fan of MBM since about 1992, but I’ve never had a chance to see them play live until last night. I was totally amazed. I’ve never seen so many Mac laptops on stage for a performance like this. Jono and I were extremely impressed. The cables running around on that stage would probably give most normal roadies a heart attack. There was so much small, powerful gear up there. We had a hard time identifying some of it. I’m hoping someone else taking notes will have better luck than me. Jono said something slightly over my head about how he thought they were running Digital Performer, and clock syncing to a DV cam. (correct me if I got that wrong, jono

Anyway, after Dalek finished up, the guys took the stage and played an awesome set. I’m somewhat at a loss to describe how awesome it was. It just was. I’m no music critic, but this was a great show. They played a blend of songs spanning most of the Meat Beat Manifesto catalog. What a trip to hear some of those older cuts performed live! I was smiling a mile wide all night… I kept thinking “holy crap! this is so cool!”

The visuals were mind bending… not content to be straight clips of anything, the visuals were a giant blender of cultures. I can’t even imagine how much work it took to put that show together. We were just stunned.

The crowd was nice.. in demeanor and in size, I suppose. I only had to cut through the crowd once, and everyone was courteous. I know it’s kind of silly to mention it, but, I guess I don’t get out much anymore, so I appreciate a respectful crowd. There were a lot of people there, but there was still room enough to get right up on the stage and get the photos I got.

Jono and I were just buzzing the whole trip home because we were so inspired by what we’d just experienced. This is what a performance can be. This is what a good concert is.

attack of the kitchen

We’re almost halfway through our kitchen counter renovation… I gotta grout that side of the kitchen… tomorrow. Then, unexpectedly, the garbage disposal just died tonight. Water everywhere, lots of new smells upon cracking open the pipe connections. We’re having half the family over for xmas dinner in 3 days. Tomorrow’s going to be action-packed!

Countertop demolition timelapse 2

here we are DIY-in’ it up again, making a one molecule countertop into about a bazillion molecules. It’s fun smashing all that shit up, woo yeah. Clearing it out and cleaning it up, not quite as much fun, but… doable. As you can see, we debated how to lay out the granite tiles a lot. I think that’s an important part of this kind of project where you have no experience, and you have no idea how it’s going to turn out… talk it over and try things out before you literally set it in stone.

Since this footage, I’ve cut the particle board “underlayment”, so to speak, overlapped at the right angle so as to flatten it out and strengthen it over time… we’ve gotten a good look at how we’ll lay out the tiles. Next comes securing it down and then getting on to cutting tiles for the front trim and the backsplash. This is going to be fun and scary at the same time.

WRC Theme Viewer update

I’ve made a leap back into helping develop the back end of the
themes.Wordpress.net theme viewer after a brief hiatus. Things are moving along so nicely. Alphaoide and Shadow have been doing some absolutely fantastic work, and I’m extremely pleased with how cool this project is. There’s a page set up to show you the feature/bug list and the changelog.

Brother SE270D

Our Brother SE-270D sewing/embroidery machine arrived yesterday, woot!

Here’s what was in the box, woot indeed!

Hey, look, it even embroiders into the wrong fabric, without stabilizer! Crapily! AMAZING!!

This is the backside of the cloth in the previous photo. Yuck.

Lots to like in this machine!! I’ll take some video and post it later tonight if I get a chance.

I can tell you right now that the new Treo just jumped the shark. Palm just jumped the shark. My treo 650 was the last great thing they ever did. As long as I can still get batteries for the next 3 years or so, that’ll be fine, all will be well in the world. But… putting a microsoft OS on your phone… what a horrible idea. The next phone I get ain’t gonna be a M$ device… count on it.
