Comic Life, make your own comics

Comic Life, make your own comics: “comic.jpgComic Life from Plasq might just be the coolest Mac applications that made me go ‘no way!’ since Delicious Library. In MAKE we feature comics from Howtoons.org and I love the idea of using an photos I have around here to my own comics. Here’s the first one I made called ‘IT CAME FROM MAKE’ (click here to view). It’s a one page comic with stuff I posted to my photo site. Speaking of– on a MAKE-mash up note, wouldn’t it be cool if this app ‘slurped’ in your Flickr photos so you could make (and share) comics from all your Flickr photos? Might make a cool web app.”

These are the Musolomo guys! This app is insane! With a 30 day trial!

Simpson Strong Ties – take 3

Hey, I just spent 2 hours yesterday constructing a 3rd work bench for my shop using Simpson Strong Ties. Check out a timelapse video of the short two hours it took to build a workbench.

These strong ties are great because you can walk into home depot, grab four or five 2×2″ studs, a 2×4′ plywood panel, the right number of strong tie brackets that you need, and a box of screws, and then go home and have more storage space and a work space in a couple of hours. I’d highly recommend doing this if you need storage and you’re short on cash. They even have the plans online… and a pretty good website, overall.

btw, background music is Dub Pscience “Drop it in the slot”… a pretty good breaks album for being busy to.

second life as prototyping tool

to Bruce Sterling:

hey, Bruce!

I thought you’d be interested in something I’m discovering about the pseudo-MMORPG Second Life (http://www.secondlife.com) …

Second life is an _excellent_ ten dollar 3d modelling/virtual prototyping environment. I wanted to create a laptop stand for my treadmill so I can dork out while I’m getting a workout.. due to changes to the powerbook line, the magazine rack no longer works very well on al-books, so a stand became necessary.

prototypes in second life:

end result with real wood and metal:

What’s cool about second life is that you can log in with some friends and they can suggest ideas, or collaborate in 3d. Seems like this might be an interesting tool to try out in the classroom?

Hey, I love what’s going on with your blog! I’ve been keeping up since the veridian days, so thank you for such an interesting read!

I Have Political Enemies

I Have Political Enemies: “

Despite running beautifully designed graphic tees all the time, we still have a big crush on plain black tees with a clever quip across the front.

MadJoe’s ‘I Have Political Enemies’ is a perfect example of one of those kinds of shirts. It pretty much says everything it needs to in four words and gets out of your way. Also, it’s nice and nonpartisan. So it works as much for Markos Moulitsas Zúniga as it does for Mike Drudge. Although after looking at the rest of the shirts on MadJoe’s site, I bet a douchebag like Drudge would get his panties in a wad…

Allinbox.com

It occurs to me, I haven’t posted about allinbox.com, even though I’ve been soaking it up for about a month over there now. This is a little piece of DIY LCD Projector heaven in French. Each photo on that page links to multiple pictures of each build. I definitely appreciate all the great ideas there. Amazing stuff.

DIY Overhead Projector – take 3

Well, I’ve been real busy on the projector project. jono and I did one for him… learned a lot about 0.5mm pitch flat flex cable that time. I bought a couple of monitors. One didn’t work for this project, one did. Here’s the design I came up with for the CMV CT-529a 15″ LCD, stripped out for use over an overhead projector:

more angles here … This monitor was so great to work with, I’d recommend it if you’re going to do something similar. I got mine from Memory Labs in San Jose, and was able to pick it right up instead of waiting for shipment. Tell them Steve sent you if you buy one from them.

I was able to bandsaw out the on screen display (OSD) controls and slap them on the corner of the unit. I think the design is working pretty good. I may need to counterbalance the “glass end” as the “electronics end” is heavier and on certain projectors, I may not be able to orient the glass this way for the image to appear correctly. Also, heat doesn’t appear to be a problem on the projectors I’ve tested on, but I may need to figure out forced air ventilation… many things to think about.

Also, I’ve been prepping the extra 17 projectors I have for resale. They were filthy when i got them, so they require a good scrubbing to get the tape, stick on labels, packing slip pouches, saw dust, dirt, and general funk off of them. Some have damage from shipping, so, I’m trying to franken-fix the best ones from the parts I have. I’m learning a lot about front surface mirrors, balasts, optics, heat dissipation, lens throws, and doing a lot of fun problem-solving-fabriation.

Pasta Guitar – this is what the web can be

Dave Bayer provides one of the best webpages I’ve ever seen, on a topic I’ve never heard of before, making a Chitarra, or a Pasta Guitar. No skimping on details or notation! This is truly what the web can be. Let all who create web pages take a lesson from his example. Informative, philosophical, technical, and illustrated. Nice work!

Free CDM Moog/Digital MP3 Ringtone – createdigitalmusic.com

help: DIY multimedia projector

Have you seen this, or know where we can locate some of the ribbon cable shown here? It’s about 15.5mm wide, 30 pin and ~0.35mm thick. Click to see close up photos of the ribbon and connector.

Update:http://dkc1.digikey.com/US/PDF/T043/P1.html

http://dkc3.digikey.com/PDF/T043/0049.pdf

here’s the 6″ part: 30pin 15.5mm digikey part number: HFF-30U-06-ND price each: $5.40 parlex part number: 0.5MM-30-6-B

I’m almost certain this is it. Holy crap, you would have a hard time resolving how many emails we sent out and have thus far gotten no response from to try to find this information. Heuristics in full effect, oooof.

HOWEVER, I would like to give special thanks to Ken at Meritec who was extremely helpful, and very generous. I’d recommend that if you’re looking to do a medium to large fabrication job, the folks at meritec might serve you very well.

Update 2: Yeeeeeeeeah! I want to thank Pik Narksuk of Fujikura America, Inc. for helping us out and handing me 6 one foot cables to the specs I was looking for! See that photo? F-U-J-I-K-U-R-A! Thank you thank you thank you! I think these are going to do the trick!

dude, that’s like.. $60 worth of cables right there, dang!

Update 3: Ok, things are working quite well with the new cables after jono and I spent a whole day figuring out the best way to strip that stuff. (sandpaper some off, then scrape with a sharp sharp blade, easy pressure, no rushing. You’ll tear it or scrape off the metal if you’re too aggressive) check it out:

oh, a video you want? Ok, here’s a video to go watch!

Now we’re starting to run into new problems with the design. We repacked up the whole mess of electronics of the monitor back into the case, and are comfortably using the longer FFC cables to clear the boards from the sides to provide a clear channel for the light from the overhead projector… Now what we’re starting to realize is that the whole mess-of-electronics-repacked-into-the-case is maybe going to prove to be a serious problem when we actually get the glass onto the overhead projector.

have you seen this cable, or know where we can locate longer lengths of it?:

the cables say “Sumitomo-Y” on them. I tried to contact the US representative for that manufacturer, but they haven’t gotten back to me. Notice, also, the cable appears to be made with semi-rigid blue plastic as the substrate. It’s somewhat flexible, but it’s much more rigid than the FFC cable. On the FFC cable, the leads were plated with some silvery metal over copper. We haven’t dissected this cable, so I don’t know for sure what the story is with the internal construction. We do know the cables are ~44.5mm wide, ~1mm pitch between the leads, and ~0.4mm thick. Ideally we’d find cables that would be 6-12″ long? Shorter is fine. Help, have you seen this cable or know where can find it?

parade of transformers…

has anyone but me and jono noticed the sudden parade of transformers all over the place? Perhaps we’re reaching the age when the kids who grew up watching the transformers are in charge of creative departments now, and have the desire to see the idea explored in a more realistic looking visualization. I love it, so, I couldn’t be happier if a whole bunch of macross or other transformer/mecha movies came out. That would be totally awesome.
