quartz coreimage command line tool

ok, it’s not quartz or coreimage, but if you’re looking for a command line image manipulation tool for mac os x, you’re probably looking for “SIPS” - scriptable image processing system.

Ok, so, why? my favorite lazy gallery software PHPix3 is really just killing me with the PHP internal GD thumbnail generation time. I’m thinking it’s about time to take advantage of the internal tool available to me since I’m rockin’ tiger server. So, I’m thinking all I need to do is go locate the code the determines whether the image tool the scripts use is “int” or “ext” and maybe add another piece of logic to act on “sips” as the value. Hopefully it will run faster than GD. If not, I guess I can go back to ImageMagick. Although it would be nicer if apple’s command line tool were fastest… we shall seeeee…

Shop Notes 73 minilathe cutting diagram

I probably should have posted this a long time ago, but here it is.. Click here for a PDF of a helpful if not totally scientific cutting diagram for ShopNotes 73’s Mini Lathe. It doesn’t include the dimensions of the pieces, so you’re still going to need to buy the back-issue, but, this is the best thing that I did to ensure that I was able to complete the entire project… Also, double check my drawing before you start slicing up plywood. ALSO, I’m not responsible for your over-eagerness. Exercise caution when operating powertools, don’t be stupid, etc, etc, etc. I’m providing this diagram for informational purposes only! make sure you know what you’re doing, yadda yadda yadda.

DIY Treo 650 headphone adapter leash

I admit I have a hard time sitting still. When I find a problem with a solution within reach, it’s hard for me to not solve it.

the stock treo 650 holster is.. good… at only holding the treo, and nothing else, whatsoever. I think I’d love a treo holster identical to the stock one, but with two pouch pockets on the outside for the headphone adapter, and the earbud mic/headphone for hands free phone usage.

Failing that, I wanted a way to keep my headphone adapter on me at all times for emergency Bhajis loops and Microbe music creation urges. Boy these headphone adapters are expensive for what they do, and holy crap is it easy to lose them… no more!

What I’ve done is to cut a piece of the good 3/4″ birch plywood into a general pill shape, sanded down to have no rough edges… (10 minutes modelling done in second life)

Second Lifescreensnapz001

then I’ve drilled a hole big enough to fit the headphone adapter into,
Second Lifescreensnapz002

and an adjacent smaller hole.
Second Lifescreensnapz003

Into the smaller hole went a zip tie, not cinched all the way down so as to form a loop, and trimmed down to have no “tail”. The locking part went into the the hole in the plywood so as to prevent further cinching, then I glued it in place.

Likewise after the drilling was done, I’ve glued the headphone adapter into the larger hole to prevent it from.. well, ever coming out….

Next was to locate a cheap carabiner and to loop it into the side of the treo holster. Functionally, the next step would be to pop the now leashed headphone adapter into the caribiner, but, aesthetics kicked in, and I painted it black with some acrylic paint and a brush.

Here’s the final product:

Hopefully you’ll be able to keep your headphone adapter with you at all times too! :)

HOWTO: create a favicon.ico on Mac OS X

what with all this nice new traffic to my site thanks to the Make: blog, I figured it was high time to do a favicon.ico file for my site. On the mac, this is a snap, thanks to Takeshi Ogihara’s IcoMaker. Head over to his page (assuming it’s a he), and look for the link at the bottom of the page, something like: “IcoMaker Distribution Package, 84KB”. Download it and unpack it.

Grab whatever image you want to use for your favicon.ico file, open it in photoshop, the gimp, or whatever you have (uh… iphoto may work too?).

Reduce the imagesize to 16 pixels by 16 pixels and Save a copy.

(optional: Undo the downsizing, and re-resize the image down to 32 x 32 pixels, and save another copy. Undo the resizing again and re-re-resize the image down to 48×48, and save a third copy)

Open up Takeshi’s excellent program and select “File -> new document”. A small multi-paned window will appear with six small windows.

select “File -> Include Image…” and navigate to where your copy (or copies) are. Choose the 16 x 16 pixel copy. A dialog box will appear giving you the option to reduce the colors down to 16 colors (or just hit “ok” to leave it in as many colors as your image was in, up to 256). Depending on what you chose to do, one of the six small windows will now be populated with your image.

repeat as necessary for the other open slots, depending on how thorough you want your favicon file to be. (I just did the 16×16 @ 16 colors window, and the 32×32 @ 256 colors window.. should be good enough, I figure)

Save the file as “favicon.ico” and drop it in an accessible place for your webserver, most probably at the root level of your webserver’s documents directory. (on the Mac OS X and OS X Server, using stock Apache 1.3, it will be: /Library/Webserver/Documents/ … on apache 2.x, I believe it would be /Library/apache2/htdocs/ … If you’ve come this far, it’s probably time for you to learn where the root documents directory is on your webserver.

the last step is to put the following code in your <head> tag of your web page:
<link rel="shortcut icon" href="/favicon.ico" type="image/x-icon" />
<link rel="icon" href="/favicon.ico" type="image/x-icon">

that’s it, folks! :)

a killer app

Quartz composer, another idea

How about an itunes visualizer plugin that would be like a slideshow of quartz composer files? With nice transitions, etc…

Quartz Composer

Quartz Composer: “

Wow! My brother is diving into Quartz Composer, part of the Dev Tools in Tiger. Amazing stuff. Graphical programming for graphical animations. All of Quartz exposed in an elegant GUI. For you Tiger fans, here’s a little test… clap your hands to make the image move.

better yet, turn on some music. :) (if you’re on a laptop)

tiger: quartz composer, the other shoe…

Tiger: Quartz Composer

Tiger: Free Real-Time Interactive Eye Candy Maker — Quartz Composer: “Joshua Ellis (zenarchery.com) writes us with an insanely cool discovery on the Mac OS X 10.4 developer DVD. I’m still waiting on my Tiger shipment, but this will definitely be on my install. Josh writes:

So I’m playing with the new Quartz Composer in OS X 10.4, which allows you to do weird sort of graphic installation-y stuff, plus design your own screensavers. It’s basically a drag-and-drop OpenGL composer, sort of like Max/MSP for making eye candy. You can load images or QuickTime movies and do real-time graphics processing on them.

In the list of controller tools? MIDI Clock, MIDI Controllers (aka pitch and mod wheel) and MIDI Notes. I haven’t gotten all my drivers updated yet, but it appears that this eye candy can be controlled via MIDI (in addition to the keyboard, an LFO, RSS feeds, the command line…pretty much anything). And you can write your eye candy out as an actual application. Which other people can download.

You have to install the XCode Tools to get this on Tiger, but they’re included free on the DVD. The app is called ‘Quartz Composer’. I think Macs may have just gotten a couple of hundred times more interesting.

Josh also tells us you can interactively map audio inputs to assign volume peak and spectrum to other controllers(!) While this is no substitute for Max/MSP and Jitter, for some visual fun and Swiss Army Knife-interactivity, looks like a must-install. Stay tuned..”

wow! WOW! wowowowow! Download an example I made. Here’s a small screen grab movie clip for those of you who aren’t on tiger yet. YEssss… here’s another. This is so much fun. What isn’t mentioned in the article is there’s drag and drop VIDEO support 3d transforms, Bonjour services, image getter, RSS feed support… IT’S OFF THE HOOK, PEOPLE!
