There are no mistakes.”
Miles Davis
“It helps to realize that an airplane spends niety percent of its time in error. We need to look at that. If you could see that you can gett an airplane from New York to London, even while being in error ninety percent of the time, maybe you could be less critical of yourself. Maybe you would allow yourself to be in error. A sailboat cannot get from where it is to where it wants to go by traveling in a straight line. It has to zigzag. So in terms of a true course, it is always in error. What is important about a sailbot or and airrplane is that the errors cancel out.”
-Dr. Robert Anthony, “Beyond Positive Thinking”
I hope that helps.

we want to thank everyone who came to our little art party and birthday shindig in Los Gatos! We had a fantastic time! The few photos I got are here… although, I don’t know how we didn’t get more photos, oh well.
Thank you again!

I’m staking a claim to the project name phpMyAgent… a google search came back empty, so I’m hoping no one else is using it. Basically, it’s an artist’s media catalog and release manager. It keeps track of artwork, music, multimedia, and the news items around them (with rss for the fans and patrons). I had begun work on this for a music-specific project, but began to see the bigger picture. If you’re going to keep track of music, which is 1 temporal dimension, why not add 3 physical dimensions while you’re at it? That covers 1 dimensional media (music, spoken word, any audio), 2 dimensional flat art (photo, fine, or digital), 2+1 dimension flat kinetic art (movies, music video) 3 dimensional art (sculpture), and 4 dimensional (kinetic sculpture, multimedia). So far the code base is music-centric and alpha quality. With a recent light bulb going on over my head about an art show we’re currently in, it seems like a good time to pick up this project and make some headway.

Hey, Ken! We studied art at Moorpark in 1992-1993. Let’s catch up, and, if you want to permanently park your domain on my server, you’re more than welcome to do that. I saw your work on the page above… it’s top notch… excellent work!
Check out my work here: steve cooley fine art.

has anyone but me and jono noticed the sudden parade of transformers all over the place? Perhaps we’re reaching the age when the kids who grew up watching the transformers are in charge of creative departments now, and have the desire to see the idea explored in a more realistic looking visualization. I love it, so, I couldn’t be happier if a whole bunch of macross or other transformer/mecha movies came out. That would be totally awesome.

My bad ass bandsaw has arrived.
here is a time lapse of it arriving… daaaaang, it’s big. Check out the height in relation to me. I’m 6 foot. Jumbo bandsaw, w0000t!!!!! I got it all slopp-i-ligned up and tried it out. Bad ass. I had to laugh at myself as I was rapidly looking around the garage for ANYthing to cut.
jules: “Vincennnnt? Are we happy?”
vince, staring inside the glowing briefcase : “… huh? Oh, yeah, we’re happy.”
7 Photos of unpacking…
update march 3 2005 – I love this bandsaw. I use it every week. I just changed to a 1/4″ 6 tpi blade last night as I probably totally thrashed the blade it came with… I tried cutting almost everything I had in my shop.. soft wood, hard wood, plastic, PVC, aluminum, steel (umm, don’t do that)… I’m totally satisfied with how it performs. I only wish I’d sprung for the factory fence when i order the bandsaw… been struggling a bit with what to do about a fence since I didn’t buy the jet fence. I’m just now wondering if I should try grinding out half the teeth in the factory blade for a skip-tooth config, and maybe try sharpening it myself? maybe too much work… new blades cost about $20-200, depending on quality. Hmm.

We found what appears to be a rejected counter top in our garage. It had a mangy looking particleboard top and some serious problems with the overall look and feel. Nonetheless, our kitchen really needs more counter space, so we decided to drag it in when our fridge came and put it where the old fridge was. Yesterday my folks and R and I went to Expo and picked out these awesome black granite tiles. They’re pretty heavy, 6lbs apiece. Amazing a little box barely over 12″x12″x10″ can weigh 60 pounds, like an über record crate or something… “l33t djs only spin platinum records.. solid platinum, that is”
ha, anyway, go check out a time lapse movie of me setting the tiles
We headed over to Home depot and picked out some 2″ wide aluminum bar to wrap around the perimeter of the MDF counter top. I’m working on cutting and setting those as well. I’ll post photos when I’m done.

My old artist friend Ken Farkash (HEY, I’d love to reconnect with you, first to probably tell me I forgot how to spell your name, sorry man!) once told me about Too Much Coffee Man. Jono triggered that memory for me this morning.

still at it. Funny as ever.

In this interview of the brilliantly talented bjork, she has some enlightening words about the current state of vanilla music and the Internet’s miraculous intervention:
So Björk is not superstitious then?
“You know, its ironic that just at the point the lawyers and the businessmen had calculated how to control music, the internet comes along and fucks everything up.” Björk gives the finger again, this time waving it into the air. “God bless the internet,” she adds.
And what about you, then?
“I’ll still be there, waving a pirate flag.”
I love it… er, well… I love her

Wow, this is.. just awesome. Those Creative Commons folks sure make a lot of sense. This is the new license they made to let artists stamp their work in an official format: Sample this! or Sample this, just not for commercial use. or Sample This, the whole thing if you want, just don’t resell it at all.
I’m actually really pumped about this because I’ve always felt like there’s a whole army of musicians around me, and I’d love to do an audio interview with them and release the audio in CC format. It’s a great way to let the underground musician get some street cred, and it lets the listener get some insights into what underground musicians think about music and creativity… and it’s also great inspiration to keep creating music. With the audio as CC format, it then is able to be used as part of the creative work for people who get it and are on the same wavelength.
I’ve had a couple of conversations with Derek Scott somewhat recently about music and the future of music, and I remember thinking immediately afterwards, “dang, I wish I’d had that whole conversation recorded!”

The best audio/visual asynchronous adapted connection I’ve ever experienced.
