iSight as digital camera

Photo 039

here’s the ol’ pro tripod iSight mount in action… acting as a digital camera while my regular one is in the shop…  I’m using BTV Pro to manually control the camera’s mechanical focus…  that works pretty good. Yes, those patches again.

CDM: NAMM: StealthPlug, Digital Guitar Cable

NAMM: StealthPlug, Digital Guitar Cable (1/4″ to USB):

When is a digital cable better than a digital guitar? When it actually solves a problem guitarists have. We’re still not sure what’s so great about Gibson’s Digital Guitar, even after hearing it played at NAMM but we immediately grasped the utility of IK Multimedia’s new StealthPlug. It’s a compact audio interface built into a cable that makes it dead simple to plug a guitar into a computer and take advantage of software-based amp and effects modeling.

One side of the StealthPlug has a standard 1/4″ jack, while the other has a USB plug. It also includes volume adjustment buttons, an indication LED, and a 1/8 stereo output for headphones, powered speakers, or an amp. Ed: note that the headphone amp makes this a great practice amp — or an in-ear monitor feed. -PK

The StealthPlug includes AmpliTube Live and LE, with  guitar amp and effects models based on modern and vintage classics. It is expected to ship first quarter for a price yet-to-be determined.

Even I could be persuaded to pick up a guitar if I had one of these to plug into garageband…  please oh please <$100…

Sad little headphones

Sniff… My poor bose quiet comfort 2 headphone developed multiple cracks in the plastic and broke last night. One call to them and we’re all set to exchange these free of charge, but, I have to pay for shipping :(

holy schmoly

So last night, I hung out with Dobox Recordings founder Derek Scott, and internationally known music producer Qorser. I was easily the squarest peg in the room… maybe a square with rounded corners. The first 2/3 of the night was just a ridiculously amazing show and tell of technologies and music that we’re working on. Derek and Qorser completely blew me away with the sheer volume of materials in the works. The last 1/3 was a ridiculously amazing show and tell about music we’ve found on various places on the interweb. Then, the bonus round was all about the loose game plan. I threw out the idea that Some Sounds We Like might be a good place to post links to musicians we find. So, hopefully in the coming weeks, you’ll be getting more good posts from these guys… stay tuned. :)

microformats and structured blogging

This is my one sentence sell on “Why structured blogging?”: I can catalog my data for the long term, have a web presence for search engines to crawl to help people find me, and then offer them a feed so they can stay connected to my content.

Help out WordPress

Professionally, what am I?

I guess it depends on who you ask. To a designer or marketer, I’m a programmer. If you ask an application developer, I’m a “scripter”. If you ask some web technologist, I’m a programmer, and graphics people get lumped in with scripters. What? Wait, what scripts are people doing that aren’t programming anymore?

more web 5.4

Slashdot says:web .

IT: Web 3.0
Posted by CmdrTaco on Tuesday January 17, @09:12AM
from the worth-your-time dept.
It’s funny. Laugh.
SpunOne writes “Apparently Jeffrey Zeldman is as sick of Web 2.0 as many of us have become. In his latest article, titled “Web 3.0,” he really sticks it to the Web 2.0 fan boys, and dispels a lot of the hype generated by our young new friends. It’s easy to grow apathetic when a new idea gains so much traction so quickly, but his points are clear and accurate, and deserve consideration.”

The comments are good.

I axed my highly intelligent brother wtf the hype is all about with ruby on rails. He said essentially that it’s easier to get going with web apps with RoR than it is with Java. Aha, I thought, all you comp sci kids graduating with java skills and looking to do web apps, ok. That I can understand. I don’t come from that direction. I come from the design side, the “solve this problem now” side. I come from the human-readable side, which is why I like PHP. Usually easy to read, easy to edit, no compiling, and it doesn’t preclude you from using frameworks or ajax, or realtime flash generation, static graphics generation… about 170 other useful things.

Compile my website??… how “computer 1.0”.

Garageband: awesome podcasting tool

So much to like in the new iLife 06, garageband getting a ginormous update, holy crap… including the ability to easily record audio (and video stills!) from iChat:

Apple.com

With GarageBand 3 and iChat, you can host your very own talk show as easily as carrying on a friendly chat with a few pals.

So even if today’s guests are in Paris while you’re in Peoria, you can still put on a podcast together.

Just start an audio chat using iChat and hit record. GarageBand simultaneously records the audio from your chat and assigns different tracks to each participant — identified by buddy name and icon — so you can edit everything seamlessly. And if you’re using iSight cameras to conduct a video chat*, GarageBand even captures a real-time still image every time each guest speaks.

See? Instant podcast talk show. And you didn’t even have to dodge a flying chair.

Typography from the train

Every time I take the train up to san francisco, I always get excited about typography because of all the graffiti bombin’ there is on the walls lining the train route.
