home made vacuum chamber

I’ve been thinking a lot about woodworking and specifically inlay work. The Rockler catalog has some cool pre-made strips of inlay that are really colorful, kidstuff, mostly… I’d like to duplicate the technique, and I suspect that the colored wood that I’m seeing is industrially stained in a vacuum chamber.

Now, what I’m thinking is that I could probably duplicate this effect by trying some cheaper types of vacuum creating machines… the industrial ones start in the US$5,000 range. The next thing I thought of was one of those foodsaver things. Target has them for a still too steep price of US$130 for the model I’d need to do what I want.

Today I found a link to a site that gives a technique to vacuum seal seeds for small farm farmers using a bicycle pump, a coffee can, a sheet of rubber for a gasket, and a resealable mason jar. This is so cool, the author listed this technique in the public domain, as a gift to the world (now mirrored on my server)

copy cat

Despite my natural affinity to cats, I keep having this dream about this tiny cat.. it’s that crazy new cloned cat – “CC” – copy cat… the first dream was just this little genetically engineered cat that fit in the palm of my hand running around being spastic and cute, and then the next night, I dreamt of the same cat, only I had an even smaller little dog, and then another even smaller cat than that… and the first cat, still small enough to fit in the palm of my hand started chasing the dog around…

then I woke up…

Jono and I are 5 volleys deep into our first photoshop tennis match. I thank the guys at coudal partners for the idea, but too bad they never got back to me about my interest in playing a match. Oh well, they don’t have the only tennis court in town. I made my own. check out the match here
